Indians scattered on dawns highway bleeding
ghosts crowd the young child's fragile eggshell mind

As I have read/heard about that lyric it was alluding to a time in Morrisons younger years. While on a family trip the clan came across an accident on the highway.

Apparently, there was a group of native Americans riding in the back of a pick-up truck involved in the wreck, several were killed, and the entire incident made quite the impression on a young and impressionable Lizard King

Hardly an "awful" line.

Yeah I know where the line supposedly comes from and crowbarring it into some dreck about political unrest make it an awful line.
